FITZROY GARDENS
Down from Brunswick Street, the Fitzroy Gardens is 26 hectares of historic and beautiful greenery located on the southeastern edge of the Melbourne Central Business District. The gardens were originally set aside as a reserve in 1848, and follow a classic Victorian-era design, featuring extensive lawns and pathways lined with mature elm trees, as well as a variety of garden structures and floral displays.
The Fitzroy Gardens have many attractions for visitors to enjoy, such as the Cooks’ Cottage, the historic home of Captain James Cook’s parents that was relocated from England in 1934. The gardens also have a Conservatory, Sinclair’s Cottage, and a Spanish mission-style building that showcases magnificent floral displays. Other points of interest include a miniature Tudor village, the Fairies’ Tree carved sculpture, myriad fountains and statues, and the Scarred Tree, a remnant of the original vegetation that bears the ancient marks of First Nations people.
